Division Dominates!

Ok, so is everyone feeling pretty overwhelmed with this concept we call division? It is tough for our students. It requires a lot of steps and operations. It requires a lot of PATIENCE on both the part of the student and the teacher. I promise it will get better though! Thank you for trying the "new" methods and being supportive as kids bring home some different looking homework. Below are some pictures of what we have been using to teach division. You may be familar with these methods or this could be the first time you have heard of them. The first method students learned was the Place Value Model for Division. This helps the students to see that division is all about equally sharing and regrouping when needed. We look at each value and divide and then regroup into the next place value and continue. Students have to draw a place value graphic organizer to help them with this model.

The next method we learned was the standard algorithim. This is the method most of you will be familiar with. It is the only way I remember learning how to divide. It is the hardest of the methods for students. Underneath this method I have also included the "Limo" method. Students seem to like this way the best. It works horizontally instead of vertically like the standard algorithim. It helps the kids to keep the information organized a little better. Which ever method the students choose I hope you will be supportive. I have learned that if students will learn and know their multiplication facts division will be SOOOOO much easier! Thanks for all your support and good luck!
