Well it has been a while... but I wanted to get back to the blog!
We have been writing about our favorite Olympic sports. The kids used the following website to help them gather their information for their papers. The site also has some fun videos that they may want to view at home. Here's the site: winterolympics4kids.weebly.com/sports.html
We have also been working on our typing skills. Here's the link for our site: www.typingweb.com
Sign in using your student number for both the username and password!
Hope you enjoy using these websites! Have a great weekend and I promise to sign on again soon!

Expanded Form Multiplication Models

Today in class we learned how to multiply 2 digit by 2 digit numbers. We aren't quite ready for the standard algorithm so we used a model! Below I have included a picture that will hopefully walk you through using this model. Thanks for your support!
The expanded form model basically breaks the multiplication problem into 4 simpler, smaller problems. You then take each of those products and add them together to get the answer! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Costa Rica!!

So I hope you are all having a great week! We made it to the Arenal Volcano. I am going to post a picture and I want you to see if you can guess what kind of cloud is at the top. We read about it in the cloud book! I will keep trying to post pictures as I see some fun things! I miss you guys and Laua I promise we are staying safe!

Expanded Form and Multiplication

This week.
This week in math we will be learning some multiplication methods for 2-4 digit numbers times one digit numbers. Here is what we will be doing!
Monday: Lesson 2.6 Expanded Form Models
Here students use a model very similar to a distributive property model to break a large number into smaller multiplication problems.
40

   3

200

For example:  243 x 6=

1,200

240

18
    6

1,200 + 240 + 18= 1,458
By breaking the problem up into expanded form it makes the problem much simpler!
The rest of the week we will be doing a similar process but will gradually break away from models and move into the standard algorithm.  If I feel it is confusing I will post again later this week.

A New School Year Has Begun!

We have had a great first couple of days of school. Today begins our first full week of school. With that we also begin homework packets. Today, your student brought home their packet of homework for the week. The entire packet is due this FRIDAY morning. Here is what needs to be done each afternoon:
Monday:
1. Cut new spelling sort. Sort it out and then write the sort on the sheet provided. Don’t forget to read the sort out loud when you are finished. Keep your cut sort in a baggie so you don’t lose it during the rest of week!
2. Complete the 4 math problems on the page under the Monday heading. Practice your 2s times tables.
3. Choose 2 vocabulary words and write sentences for these words on your sheet.
4. Read for 30 minutes and record it on your STAR contract.
5.  Have mom or dad look over your homework and sign your STAR contract. Don’t forget to bring your orange homework folder back to school EVERYDAY!

Tuesday:
1. Sort your spelling words and then say them out loud. Choose 6 words and write sentences with them. Write it on your sheet.
2. Complete the 4 math problems on the page under the Tuesday heading.

Wednesday:
1. Sort your spelling words and then say them out loud. Choose 6 words and write sentences with them. Write it on your sheet.
2. Complete the 4 math problems on the page under the Wednesday heading.
Thursday:
1. Sort your spelling words and say them out loud. Give your cards to your mom or dad and have them give you a spelling pre-test. Write your test on the sheet provided.
2. Complete the 4 math problems on the page under the Thursday heading. Practice your 2s times tables and be ready for your test tomorrow.
6. Have your packet ready to be turned in tomorrow morning!
Friday:
1. Turn in your homework packet.
2. Read for 30 minutes during the weekend and record it on your STAR contract. Be ready to turn in your STAR contract with the reading journal completed on Monday morning.

Protractors and other Information!

This week we are learning how to use PROTRACTORS to measure angles in degrees. This is hard for a lot of students. If you have a protractor at home or can pick one up it would be helpful to have your student work with it. Draw angles and have them measure them or let them draw angles with a specific measure. We are also getting ready to start our unit on measurement and conversion of measurement. Here is this week's planner:
Monday: 11.3 Draw and Measure Angles Homework: Practice 12s
Tuesday: 11.3 Continued: No Homework
Wednesday: 11.4 Join and Seperating Angles 9s Test Today! Homework: 9s practice
Thursday: Introduction to Chapter 12 Measurement and 12.1 Measurement Benchmarks Homework: P221-222 and study for 12s test!
Friday: 12.2 Customary Units of Length

Here are some links to some fun Protractor Games online:

Science This Week:
We have been watching and observing birds this week. We have also been learning about insects and spiders and how they are different. We are going to be learning about Utah's environments as well.
This scholastic site tells the differences between spiders and insects: Spiders Vs Insects

Have a great week!

Geometry Week!

This week we have been doing lots of geometry! Yesterday we learned how to classify quadrilaterals, we have learned about polygons, rays, line segments, lines, and angles. We have even learned how to classify triangles by looking at their angles. This week we are working with symmetry and pattern problem solving. We will have a test on Friday to finish up our geometry unit. I am including some fun links for symmetry games. Symmetry is ALL around us! Have your student practice by looking for symmetry in the world around us. Look at words, signs, and art. Look for symmetry while you are shopping or driving. You'll be suprised at how often you can find it!
